EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND
Victoria is the youngest of three kids. she has two older brothers and her parents are pastors. She grew up partly in Benin City, Nigeria while her parents were there doing missionary work. That’s how she ended up finishing high school here in Nigeria. She has been singing since she was about 9 years old but she didn’t record any song officially until she was about 16 and then she started singing back-ups, choir and also writing songs for other people.
After leaving Benin City, they went back to Kenya. She got into a university, but what she immediately did was singing back-up for Mercy Mara and she travels a lot with her music. She had to ask herself if she wanted to sit in school or she want to follow her dream which is music. It was really hard for her to take that decision because her parents wanted her to finish school and all that, but she couldn’t go on. She wanted to be on the stage and her parents eventually let her follow her dreams and she never went back to college. “Probably I’ll still go back to school, because there are some things I want to learn. I am really interested in psychology and how people think, but somehow, it will still be tied to my music. “ SHE SAYS.
See what she said when she was in an interview asked about leaving the church for pop music…
You know it’s different, because when you are singing for the lord, you don’t really have people judging you saying what’s she wearing and all that kind if talks. But when you are an entertainer, it becomes a totally different feeling. But musically, I feel its similar, because both are from the heart. Now, I do have some gospel songs in my forthcoming mixtape. So, it’s not like I am not singing about God anymore. I sang in the choir while I was in Benin City and subsequently, I always sing in church with my dad. He’s a professional Guitar player and he used to be a singer too. Now my parents are used to it. I’ve been singing for a long time, so by now I think they are used to it. And as long as I am conservative and properly dressed, its fine with them. They won’t want reports from members of their church saying we saw your daughter on television and she was scantily dressed (laughs). And even when they try to complain about my outfits, I just show them a picture of Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj and I’ll be like mum, ‘am not that bad, see what these people are wearing’.
Chocolate City opened a branch in Kenya last year and that’s where she signed, but because the mother branch is here in Nigeria, and because of the type of music she does, it is necessary for her to be in Nigeria. So, she end up going back and forth. But back in Kenya, She will say that when she came into the Kenyan music industry with her songs and music videos, they hadn’t seen anything like it. But here in Nigeria, there are a lot of female musicians. So, it’s not new here and that hasn’t happened in Kenya yet. She think she is probably the first person to come back from the states with a brand new kind of hip hop music. “We are just in the process of creating an industry for ourselves in Kenya, but to be honest, I think it was like a big shock for a lot of people when I came back to Kenya with that video because we didn’t have those types of videos in Kenya.” SHE SAYS.
